35mm Vs. Digital

Standard

The digital wave is here and it is kicking 35mm out of the running. Everyone consumers and professional alike, are switching over to this newer media and the old is being left in the dust. As the war between the two medias dies down it is clear that digital photography is the new standard. But is it better then 35mm?

A lot of people will debate whether digital is better than 35mm. Just the same that people claim that vinyl is better than CDs or MP3s. It is true that 35mm has been around for awhile and that it has had a good run. There are however a lot of avid 35mm users that will never switch over to digital photography, and that’s alright it is important to not forget the way we used to do things. It gives us a greater appreciation for the things we have now.

If you take a picture with a digital camera you just have to look at the LCD screen to get an idea of what it looks like. If it looks bad delete it and take another. On 35mm there was no way to see if your picture came out alright and every picture you take used up the roll. So digital pictures can be taken and not cost you anymore than what the memory card cost you. With 35mm you pay for every picture you take.

So 35mm is more costly to the photographer but some do not really see that as a major deal. One of the bigger issues with 35mm is that most 35mm cameras only allow for 36 pictures per roll of film. Then you have to swap it out and always have more film on you. With digital photography the number of pictures you take depends on the size of your memory card and the resolution. If you have a 4 GB memory card at 8mp per photograph you can fit around 1025 pictures on one memory card. So the number of pictures you can take at one time is a lot more than you can with the standard 35mm camera.

Another great advantage of digital is the fact that you can change the ISO setting on the camera whenever you decide, from image to image. When you are dealing with 35mm you have to change the film in the camera to get a different ISO sensitivity. Not only that but film fades with time. Sure you can make copies and try to persevere the negatives, but eventually time will take its toll. With digital you can save that image on a hard drive, memory card or upload it to a photography website and it’ll last forever, as long as there are computers to upload your photos to.

One of the greatest things about digital photographs is that you can instantly put your pictures on the computer and have them ready to print or alter or to upload them to your photography website. With 35mm you need to have the photographs developed and then printed, and then you need to scan them to your computer to upload them to your photography website or get them sent in an email. All that stuff can cost a lot of money after awhile, not to mention a large time consumer.

Digital photography has won and 35mm has had its run and given us many memories to look back on. Digital photography has opened the door for many professional photographers and consumers alike.
