Lawyer Web Design: Your Not On The List

February 21, 2008 9:46 am

After coming to terms with your decision to make an investment you should start doing some research. By this I mean that you should start making a list of everything you want from your website; colors, pages, and functionality. You can get all of these ideas by looking at other websites for inspiration. Look at other lawyers’ websites or look at law firms’ websites to get a good idea of what seems to be working and what you like; look at how their sites are laid out and how easy it is to navigate through the pages. The whole time that you’re browsing around you should be writing a lot of notes on what you like and what you want to incorporate into your website.

Because there isn’t really a lot to a lawyer’s website you really won’t have a lot of functions on your site. If you happen to see something on another site that you want as a function don’t hesitate to write it down and mention it to your web designer. Choosing a web designer is a whole other piece of the pie, and we will get into that in a later post. After getting ideas from other websites you should sit down and take a look at your list. There could be some things that you feel you can do without, or something that sparks a new idea to be put down, try to look at it from all angles. If a client is going to be looking at your website, what are they going to want to see?

I would think, as an outside view, that a client is going to want to see a website that is well put together and professional looking. There are websites out there for lawyers that look like they were built by an amateur. Now, we all know that lawyers make quite a good chunk of money so the fact that they didn’t spend the money or effort to make sure that their website was nice looking says a lot about them. I wouldn’t say that everyone is going to pick a lawyer just based on their website but it really gives off that first impression for those who don’t know anything about you.
