After all this work to get your lawyer website or law firm website up and running you might think that you’re out of the tunnel. Not yet, but you can see the light at the end. Depending on who you’ve chosen to do your lawyer website, a freelancer or a web design company you will either be able to go through them to get your SEO work done or not. For those of you who don’t know what SEO is I will give a brief explanation. SEO is short for search engine optimization, which is basically your website’s ability to be found on the internet through the major search engines like Google or Yahoo. I’m sure that everyone reading this has used a search engine before, the results that come up first on a search have some really good SEO work done on them.

The results that come up first are supposed to be the most relevant to the terms that you put into the search box. It is much harder to be first in the results on the broad terms as opposed to terms that are more specific. With a web design company you will either be offered SEO work to be done on your site or be shown somewhere you can go for it. Whichever way it happens, it SHOULD happen. Having SEO done on your site is going to be the only way that people are going to find you by using search engines and without knowing anything about you. There are probably a bunch of lawyers in your area that specialize in exactly what you do and if you want to be found before them than SEO is going to be required.

Ask your web designer, even if you are using a freelancer, about SEO and if they have any recommendations or tips about it. This way you will know more about it before jumping into it.

After deciding who you’re going to go with for a web designer, freelancer or web design company, the building commences. As they are going along there are a few things that you should know. With either web designer you are going to have to give them content that you want on your website. When I talk about content what I mean is all the text and images that are going to be put into your website. With lawyer web design there really aren’t going to be that many images for you to send you web designer. I would suggest having a good picture of you or if the website is for your law firm then a picture of each person on the team. This will help people be able to feel more comfortable getting in touch with you if they actually have seen a picture of you. So make sure that it is a professionally taken picture that makes you look professional and welcoming.

As far as the text on your website goes there are a few options that you have. You can write everything yourself; which really isn’t that much of a chore for a lawyer website. The text should just let people know all the information they want on each page of your website. If you choose to write this text it will be more personal. Think about it this way, who knows more about their own business than you do? Nobody. So writing the text yourself will make sure that the text is accurate in every way. The other option that you have is to use a content writer or having someone else write your text for you.

Having a content writer write your text for you would be good if you aren’t good at writing, grammar, or just don’t feel comfortable in your own abilities in writing. For lawyers, this usually doesn’t come into play because they are well educated and know their stuff. The other reason for having a content writer would be if you are too busy to do it yourself. Make sure that if you have a content writer that you give them all the information they are going to need to write good text for your site. Any way you think about it the content of the website is going to up to you in the end.

So far we’ve gotten you started on your way to creating a website for your legal firm or for your personal practice. We talked in my previous posts about the benefits of lawyer web design and how it can help you and your career by showing people where you are and what you do. It also benefits prospective clients that are looking to find a lawyer; you are more accessible to them and therefore will be found easier. I also gave you a heads up on how building a website is an investment. Although this is true it is an investment that you should make, without a doubt. My last and most recent post was about getting together your ideas so that you know exactly what you want when you go to choose a web designer; which brings me to my subject on this post.

Choosing a web designer isn’t an easy task because there are so many out there and because web design is still a somewhat gray area. There are two categories that web designers fit into, there are freelancers and there are web design companies; both have their own benefits and downfalls. A freelancer is going to be usually less money, which is important to a lot of people but there is a lot that can go wrong with a freelancer if they are not reliable. One being that it’s easy for a freelancer to disappear when they want. You can’t really ever be sure that you have a trustworthy freelancer.

A web design company is going to be a bit more expensive but you usually get more with them than you ever would with a freelance web designer. They are more reliable in the fact that they won’t be going anywhere since they are an established company. Also, they usually have a team of people working for them, making them more versatile in what they are capable of doing. These are just a few of the pros/cons about each type of web designer and you should look into each web designer that you are thinking about choosing. Getting their background and information on who they are is important to keeping your investment safe and making sure it is completed.

After coming to terms with your decision to make an investment you should start doing some research. By this I mean that you should start making a list of everything you want from your website; colors, pages, and functionality. You can get all of these ideas by looking at other websites for inspiration. Look at other lawyers’ websites or look at law firms’ websites to get a good idea of what seems to be working and what you like; look at how their sites are laid out and how easy it is to navigate through the pages. The whole time that you’re browsing around you should be writing a lot of notes on what you like and what you want to incorporate into your website.

Because there isn’t really a lot to a lawyer’s website you really won’t have a lot of functions on your site. If you happen to see something on another site that you want as a function don’t hesitate to write it down and mention it to your web designer. Choosing a web designer is a whole other piece of the pie, and we will get into that in a later post. After getting ideas from other websites you should sit down and take a look at your list. There could be some things that you feel you can do without, or something that sparks a new idea to be put down, try to look at it from all angles. If a client is going to be looking at your website, what are they going to want to see?

I would think, as an outside view, that a client is going to want to see a website that is well put together and professional looking. There are websites out there for lawyers that look like they were built by an amateur. Now, we all know that lawyers make quite a good chunk of money so the fact that they didn’t spend the money or effort to make sure that their website was nice looking says a lot about them. I wouldn’t say that everyone is going to pick a lawyer just based on their website but it really gives off that first impression for those who don’t know anything about you.

When you’ve decided that having a website dedicated to you and/or your firm you’ve just decided to make a large investment. Having a website built is almost like buying a car in many ways. I’ll be going through each of the steps with out and give you some advice on what to look for and what your role is in the building of your website. Investing in a website is going to be one of the best ways that you can put money into your business or practice. Making a website isn’t the cheapest thing in the world but it really is reasonable depending on what you want out of your site. For a lawyer’s website there really isn’t that much going on in it. If you think about it you really only need a website that is going to represent you and/or your firm.

By having yourself out there on the internet you can be sure that more people are going to find you rather than if you are just listed in the phonebook or something similar to that. It really helps those in your area be aware of your presence and show them that they have the ability to use you. Think about it this way, if you were to invest in having a website built and one or two people found you on the internet and contacted you for legal help then your website just paid for itself. That just with one or two clients, your website is obviously going to have more than two people looking at it for the length of its lifetime.

You can see why building a website is going to benefit you and be a good investment. You really should think about taking on this side of marketing. Although lawyers aren’t really in the business of getting as many clients as they can it really helps show people that you care enough to put information up on yourself for everyone to see. There is no downside to having a website built to represent you or your entire firm.

The benefits of having a website for yourself (if you’re a lawyer) are great. Having a website that shows who you are and what you are specialized in will help you project to the right people. This way you’re not having people call you for a totally unrelated problem that you wouldn’t be able to help them with. Having a website for yourself is the best way to give out all your information to those who want it without actually having to physically give it out. This would really lighten up your phone calls because there would be an alternate source for these people to go to for all their questions.

Having a website that is dedicated to you also has another benefit. The ability to show clients the other people in your firm. Sure it’s not a case going to you but keeping it in the business is still a great asset to the growth of the firm. You specialize in one area and someone else specializes in another; this is how most firms are set up. You have the whole law spectrum covered with a few people so your firm is available to help everyone. Having all these other lawyers listed on your website with what they specialize in is going to show people how versatile your practice really is.

The benefits for a lawyer are good but the benefits for a potential client are even better. They can find out everything they need to know about you without having to call and talk about it. Having a website that tells all about you and your firm is going to make a client more comfortable and inclined to call you because they will have information about you and everything won’t be so alien for them. When thinking about having a website built for you or your firm, know that it will not only benefit you but your potential clients as well.

Lawyers are sometimes seen in a bad light as being evil and heartless, but they sure help a lot of people and you have to give them credit for that. If it weren’t for lawyers, a lot more of us would be in jail right now. There are too many lawyers out there to count; you can see their firms sprinkled everywhere across the nation. This is physically of course, but can you see them on the internet? Would you be able to find them on that golden information highway? I would hope so because if not your firm will have to be found in the physical realm, which is frustrating and time consuming.

Lawyers of all kinds can have a website built for their firm or for themselves. Having a website dedicated to their practice is going to benefit in many different ways. Having yourself visible on the internet is going to shed a lot more light on your practice than you just sitting in an office would. You say you’re listed in the phonebook? Have you actually seen anyone use a phonebook anymore? Being listed in the yellow pages is not a bad idea; it just is the bare minimum of what you could actually be doing to promote yourself.

Having a website helps a lot of other people as well. Clients that are looking to find a lawyer that specializes in a certain area can hop onto the internet and find whoever they need. It’s a good tool to have for both parties because lawyers are usually busy people and don’t have the time to meet individually with each person who has a question or needs to find out more about them. It is too time consuming and lawyers are always everywhere at once. Having a lawyer website would help relieve that extra pressure from those who are just browsing for information.

Being in such a serious profession lawyers should portray themselves as such. Most people don’t look in the yellow pages anymore to pick out a lawyer. The internet is being used in place of the yellow pages. Heck, even when people want to look through the yellow pages they go to the online site to do it. It is important that a lawyer or their firm has a website to represent them in a professional way. Not having a website is almost sudden death for a starting business. It’s the same way for a legal firm; especially these days. Be sure that if you don’t know anything about web design, to have a professional build your site. There is nothing worse than a site built by an amateur, because everyone can tell.

Lawyer web design is not something people think about too often. Most lawyers that don’t have websites are older and more well-established. They most likely started their business while the internet was still a fetus. They already have a client base and are not really in need of a professionally designed website to boost their intake. Although this is true, it is also true that these types of lawyers wouldn’t lose anything by having a website. It benefits everyone; this means the firm and potential clients trying to find out who you are, where you’re located, and what type of law you practice in. This all vital information for a potential client looking for your firm on the internet.

Even if you’re well-established, you could always be even more successful. A website is a definite plus. More and more people want to find information quickly on the internet; lawyers are one of these topics. More than likely if someone can’t find you on the internet when they are looking for your keywords/terms then you won’t be used. Word of mouth is popular but the internet is faster. It’s science.

As far as lawyer web design goes, there are a whole slew of suggestions I could give. I’ve seen many different lawyers’ websites with my recent legal matters and most of them struck me as unimpressive, unprofessional, really ugly, or just a plain old website. This of course makes things easier for me because I don’t choose to use these lawyers because of it. It makes it easier to weed out the lawyers that are most likely not going to be very professional. But is this really how you want to be seen? Do you have one of these lawyer websites that looks like an argyle sweater?

Of course, if you do, I am just teasing you. I want to help you upgrade that old sweater to a newer more fashionable one. The trick is all in the design. There are a couple of things to remember when deciding to switch out your old design, things your probably didn’t do on the last website. One thing to keep in mind is color. Websites for lawyers should never be some whacked-out color. They should always be a darker toned color. This helps for a couple of reasons. Darker toned colors set the mood, the mood being serious, of course, because you’re a professional and you want to be taken seriously. They are also less distracting and upsetting to the eyes; this is important because people looking at your site are going to be reading all about your practice. They will be reading a lot and the last thing you want to do is have them annoyed at your color selection or by a busy background. Use those darker tones to you advantage.

Second thing to think about is the impression your website gives. Use sophisticated pictures and fonts when designing your site. If you do, once again, it will make you appear very professional. Also on the topic of pictures, I hate those generic blue background bust-shot pictures that everyone puts up of themselves. It looks tacky! That is just my opinion but I would suggest having a picture taken with a different background. Also make sure the picture is of good quality and is not over five years old. Maybe even taking a picture that isn’t just your bust. All this would make your

About Us/Me section stand out compared to most other lawyer websites. Another point I have is that you should always have a picture of representing the firm. A potential client is going to want to be familiar with the person they are talking to before they talk to them about all these personal legal matters. It creates a sense of comfort knowing the face of the person you are talking to.

These few simple design tips will help any lawyer website look more professional. There is not a lot of work involved, just common sense. Use it well.

With all the different law firms scratching for the same clients it would be hard to distinguish the best one from the bunch. Most people who would search for lawyers or law firms online would of course use the search engines. Most of these people would only look through to the second page of results. So you have to be sure you can be as close to the top of that search engine list as possible.

There is a term being kicked around the web today called search engine optimization, or SEO for short. This is basically the process of getting your website to be as close to the top of that search results page as possible. There are a few different ways a website can do this.

For lawyer web design you have to consider the types of words people are going to be searching for. Words like legal representation, Chicago lawyers, Chicago Law Firms, lawyer websites, the list goes on. Basically you would want your firms name to pop up at the top of the search results page. This can be done by using those key words through out your lawyer website. The more you mention a word on your website the more relevant the search engine thinks you are to the customers search. This can also be done by including a blog on your website that you can beef up with all sorts of keys words. One thing you have to watch out for is over using the words. The search engine companies know bout the little tricks people use to make sure their website is at the top of the list. So let’s say they catch you dedicating an entire page to using the words Chicago Lawyer over and over; they will black list your website and you will not get any more traffic from that search engine, which is really bad.

The other way that you can get your lawyer website to the top of the list of the search results page is to pay for it. Ever notice when ever you do a search, at the top and/or the side of the webpage there are highlighted sites that have a little description on them. They are called pay per click ads. Those websites paid to be at the top of that list. So let’s say you are a Chicago Law Firm and you take out a pay per click on Google to show up whenever anyone types in Chicago Lawyers or Chicago Law Firm. Your firm would show up at the top of that list depending on how much you paid. Now of course different key words cost more. Like Lawyers would cost more then Elgin Illinois Lawyers because the results are narrowed down by the key words. It costs a little money to take out a pay per click ad, but think about the return on that type of investment.

All the things mentioned above fall into the category know as SEO. SEO is quite a big business these days. There are companies that just do SEO for websites, and they charge a lot to do it too. DreamCo Design does free SEO on all the websites we build. We also submit your website to all the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, MSN and others. We can even set you up with pay per click ads on anyone of those search engines we submitted your lawyer website to.

So what are you waiting for? If you have a Lawyer or Law Firm website you are looking to have designed you found the right place. No one has the success rating and customer service skills we do.
