The Digital Wave.

In the past few years there has been an unbelievable amount of technological improvements in the photography industry. The most recent has been the rise of the digital media. Digital photography has exploded on to the scene with the lower prices of digital cameras and photography software. It is now easier than ever to take the pictures you have taken and transfer them to any device capable of displaying that image.

Film has been dying for some time now. It is taking it’s time to leave and it may never fully disappear, but it will certainly be a rare thing to see in the future. A lot of the major companies have stopped carrying professional grade film and chemicals to develop that film. It will not be long before we see it disappearing from the eyes of the consumer as well. This is sort of unfortunate because there was so much raw emotion that came with film. Once you took the picture that was it. You had no idea what it looked liked or how it turned out. And if you screwed up developing the negative you were done.  There was no Photoshop that you could use to adjust the lighting and what not, unless you had one great scanner.

Since it has become so easy to transfer, edit and print photos, the industry has been suffering a little. More and more people are able to take professional quality photographs without the professional photographer.  This makes the market even more competitive than it was before. With fewer customers those that still remain become rare. The photography industry is still huge; there is always a growing need for corporate photography. So really the rise of digital photography has only hurt the freelancers. Most freelancers have their full time job and the freelance part comes in as a source of extra income.

Now that it is easier to take these pictures, you get every little highschooler with a $200.00 digital camera from Target thinking they are artist and putting all their artsy pictures on MySpace. This is not really y a bad thing, it is good that people have an interest in the arts. But that’s what most do not understand is that digital photography is an art just as much as painting or sculpting. You still need a professional to get the most out of the event you are trying to capture for memories later.

What is considered Art?

How hard can it be to take a picture and print it up, design a website and launch it on the web, or design graphics for a movie poster? These things are all done by computers now and the human hand just tells the mouse or camera what to do. It is not an art in any sense of the term; it is not like you are painting a masterpiece.

Unfortunately this is the way a lot of customers think. Most people have a very limited scope on what is to be considered an art of a craft. Most will think that art is painting or drawing, they do not even consider film or photography art. And then again they see graphic design and web design as a job that anyone with some training can do in a few days. These people are not dumb or slow; they just have a skewed view of your industry and do not understand all the things that are involved.

I have talked to many people that think photography is just pointing a camera and clicking the button. I have heard people that think putting together a website is just cutting and pasting pictures and text on a blank page. Most people just do not grasp that in photography there are hundreds of variables that the photographer has to take into account while snapping that shot. Things like lighting, shutter speed, the speed of the object they are shooting, just to name a few. People just don’t get that in web design, there is a whole hidden language that they do not see on the actual web page that makes those little pictures or buttons move or direct you to another page. You have to write the directions for those kinds of things so the computer knows what to do when you click on that spot.

If you are a photographer, web designer, graphic designer, or any other media based job we feel for you. Saying your craft is underappreciated is an understatement. You all see the post on job boards saying things like “I need a photographer to take pictures at my daughters graduation party, I can’t pay you but you can use the photos for your portfolio”, or “I need a shopping cart added to my small business website, I don’t have a lot of money because I am a small business, I will pay you ten dollars an hour and might need you for future work”. Or the best “I am in need of a graphic designer with Photoshop skills that can jazz up my modeling photos, no payment but you can use them for your portfolio”.

Well we can use these things for our portfolio instead of getting paid. Great, the job of my dreams! Honestly though, we have all seen those ads on job boards and every time we see them it makes our hearts sink. Keep in mind that it is not their fault. These people just don’t understand how difficult and time consuming it is to do these things. Photography is an art and so is graphic and web design. These are seen as jobs by the general public and who could blame them?

Most people were brought up thinking that art is painting and sculpting, and they are right. In the traditional sense of art, those are the two main media types that one would first think of for art. So to all you web designers, graphic designers, photographers and any other form of media I have left out you are considered artist by those who know what you craft entails. Do not be bitter or mean to those that do not understand, just take the time to inform them of what you actually do.

DreamCo Design knows that you are an artist and we want to help you share your art with the world.
